The Shed Summer Show: Paula Youens and Chelsea Davine.

Paula Youens

E is for Eccentric by Paula Youens

Paula describes herself as ‘an artist / printmaker who takes photos – don’t we all?  As Paula maintains: ‘Digital & phone cameras made things easier for an “image-snatcher” like me.  Sometimes the most exciting and arresting pictures are those on our doorstep: a dirty puddle, the cautious child, shadows, movement, glimpses.  I keep an open, curious eye and “snatch” those ordinary moments. We can all do this – just take a minute to stop and look’.  Paula’s description of how she works and what inspires her only half explains her enthusiasm for image making. Her prints exude an energy and a vitality that is infectious, as does her photography.

On Saturday the 31st of August and Sunday 1st of September Paula will be demo-ing large scale, free drawing techniques. Using your entire arm & body to draw makes it less possible to get hung up on tiny, fussy marks. Release your inner cave woman!

Chelsea is an artist and designer. She works between Spain and the UK showing her work through the Russell Gallery in London, where she has just had a solo show, and Villa del Arte, Barcelona. She regularly shows at international art fairs from Hong Kong to Milan with her work available at the AAF – New York  and AAF – London in October. The work on show is inspired by a current project, entitled ‘Arboretum – Art, inspired by Trees’: a collective of five recognised artists due to tour in 2014. Chelsea is also the creative director behind the Shed Gallery. Her aim is to encourage and nurture artists and photographers, both amateur and professional, to sell and exhibit their work.

The Shed Summer Show update.

We are up and running and just about able to draw breath after a wonderful Bank Holiday weekend by the sea in Lyme Regis.

One of the perks of exhibiting here are the lovely long walks before and after work along the beach to watch the sunset from the Cobb. Jeanne Goodridge’s wonderful image ‘The Cobb wall in Winter’ perfectly captures  that feeling of awe and wonder of such a beautiful manmade monument:

The show has been really well received and its been wonderful to have so many visitors, friends and exhibitors alike coming in to say hello.

Georgina Bedford was delighted to see her ‘OXO’ cubes exhibited:

Hilary Buckley met an admirer of her work. Pete Hackett popped in to say hi then came back a little later and his photo ‘Customs & Excise‘ had sold!

Rachael Talibart was hoping to come and see her work but almost as soon as we had hung her ‘The Cobb at Lyme’.

A very happy lady bought it and took it home.

The exhibition is diverse and full of interesting pieces so I hope you can come along and see your own work or those of the other Shed creative’s. New work will be arriving this week and we will re-hang as work sells.

Paula Youens will also be in at the weekend doing drawing demonstrations. So if you can make it, come to Dorset and have an ice-cream from the Town Mill Cheesemonger, a walk along the Cobb and support our Shed Summer Show.

The Shed Summer Show: Lois Wakeman and Fiona G. Roberts.

Lois Wakeman

Five trees at dawn by Lois Wakeman

Lois is a photographer, potter and writer, living in the village of Uplyme just on the Dorset / Devon border on the SouthWest coast. She specialises in natural abstracts, seaside scenes and landscapes from West Dorset and East Devon, and further afield into Exmoor and Dartmoor. Her images sell well and attracted a lot of conversation and attention at our most recent exhibitions in London and Bristol. Lois finds it ‘a challenge to find new angles on familiar places, but one which I relish. Although some of the shots here are typical tourist mementos, I have also captured some of the little details and quirky corners of Lyme and its surroundings that others may have missed. I hope you enjoy seeing the world through my eyes…’ Yes, we do.

Fiona’s subject matter of her work is diverse, but recently it has been focussed on observations of the natural world drawing, in particular, on her experiences as a child growing up on a farm in the Lake District. Working mainly in oils, acrylics and mixed media, she often starts from sketches, photographs and, increasingly, memories. ‘I do not usually attempt to produce a photographically realistic representation of a place, but instead to portray the essence of, and the feelings provoked by the things that I see’. As we went to press we were eagerly anticipating her new submissions for the show. Fiona’s work is highly regarded and now collected, with successful exhibitions in Cork Street and Richmond.

He runs his own photography business, Southern Scenic Photography, specialising in atmospheric land and seascapes, product and commercial photography. He teaches photography workshops and tuition in RAW developing and Photoshop as well as photo restoration. He has been widely published. In June 2011 the Prince of Wales announced Kris was the overall winner in The National Countryside Photography competition. With this in mind we wanted to showcase his stunning landscapes and show how a photograph in large format can be equal to a painting.

Rachael is a Surrey based photographer with a particular interest in landscapes and nature. She is a Licentiate of the Royal Photographic Society and a judge for the Surrey Photographic Association. Her images have been published online, in books and in magazines, and she was short listed in the International Garden Photographer of the Year competition 2013. She has recently published a series of photographic articles and given an illustrated lecture on local waterways, the Wey Navigation. Some of her images are licensed through Getty Images and the South of England Picture Library. Rachael also writes a wonderful blog that is erudite, informative and fascinating. The quality of Rachael’s work provided us with a real issue trying to select an image for the show; however her simple B&W images of Lyme just stood out and had to be included.

Philippa is a professional photographer based in London with strong ties to the West Country. She specialises in portraits, weddings, events and PR work. Since 2010 she has been an associate member of the SWPP (Society of Wedding and Portrait Photographers) and has been awarded an ABPPA (Associate of the British Professional Photographers Associates). Her client list reads like a Who’s Who of London life, it is, however her moving recent work for a joint exhibition ‘Escape’ she held in London with Charlotte Fielding that really caught our eye. We wanted to cherry pick some of the best images and showcase them here.
