This exhibition for me represents a chance for old and young artists and photographers to throw their ideas into a melting pot and give a feast for the mind and the eye. Time for all of us to take stock and time in this cruel, cruel world. Thank god for Artists.

Muse to me means inspiration, what is inspiring to me? What drives me to take photos? I think that depends on where I am at any point in time, geographically and emotionally.  When my kids were very young, most of my photos were of them!   Now they are a little older, and a little less keen on having their photos taken, the images that I take most care of are of the landscape, the stunning coast and countryside of Dorset and East Devon.

So my inspiration for the muse summer show is the Sea.  It is the overwhelming natural force in this area – its presence defines the area, and its erosional forces make it so stunning.  It is perhaps also a little predictable as a choice for the show, but for me it has extra resonance, as it was what drew me into a job here and hence to live and bring up my family here.

If I am to narrow that down a little in the context of the images I have presented here, it is the changing colours and mood of the sea – heavy clouds reflecting onto the water turning it dark and brooding, or sparkling orange seas with the promise of a fabulous sunset.  Even the moon changes the sea.

Inspiration can come from the simplest of things but the one thing that really inspires me is light against shade and juicy vibrant colours!

However, I am frequently drawn to paint boats or trees with reflections in water as the depth of colour and shimmering reflections excite me sending me to my paints and easel. I love to experiment being bold with pigment pushing the boundaries of water-based media to capture the essence of my inspiration.

What is my Muse?

I love the silence of the hour before dawn especially by the sea. The gentle lapping of the waves onto the beach and the sound of the birds waking up as the light starts to build.

Then slowly the sky starts to turn a gorgeous orange colour as the sun starts to rise behind the horizon until it appears in a blaze of shafts of lights like a bright jewel and lights up all surrounding land and sea.

This is the time when my camera starts to click frantically to capture each moment as the light changes so quickly and the scene takes on a different appearance with each passing minute.

There is no feeling like this solitude and the way it seems you are the only person seeing this sunrise and the need to capture it to share with others.

Having grown up on the Suffolk coast, free to wander the beach and coastal paths at will, instilled an appreciation for the rhythm of nature along with tides and weather and all the wonderful treasures found and collected.

Those memories inspire my photography, as the depth of colour and texture in a rusty groin, old chains, shells and rocks or the weathered timber and peeling paint of wrecked ships is amazing, as are the patterns left in the sand as the tide goes out, reflections in the water, shadows cast from a rickety fence that look like zebra skin, the possibilities are exciting and endless.

I love the geometric shapes and colours in the Beach Huts in stark contrast to the soft beach scene between them.  It is always looking for something beyond the obvious that drives me forward, that keeps me interested and stretches my imagination.
