The Salthouse exhibition has come to an end, follow up orders and enquiries have been dealt with and we can now move forward thinking about new work in the gallery and the summer holidays.

In this era of everybody has a camera ‘I can take that too’ attitude it is very, very difficult to convert interest in photography into a sale. It is infinitely easier to sell photography when it is presented as a print in person not just an image on a screen which is why it is imperative to print your work and hold small exhibitions or take part in group shows. Take pride in what you do, the positive energy you give off when talking about your own work means those that wish to invest in your work also invest in you, the story behind the lens.

Now is the time to capitalise on the goodwill from the exhibition even though the Salthouse exhibition’s door is closed and use your own artwork as a springboard to hold your own exhibition and create more interest. It is vital to keep the positive feedback alive in the public eye. Let people know what you sold and what you have to sell. It is not about being pushy its about being proud of your practice and letting people know about it. Never underestimate the support of friends and family even if they own your work they may still talk to friend of theirs or share your work online or come along to events because they are pleased to support you.

When following up think about writing a press release about the event and sales made. Mailchimp is an excellent tool to collate contacts collected from people who have visited your other exhibitions and friends and family. Advertise locally through social media, write a small blog keeping people interested in what you do, tag possible outlets that may buy the work or wish to exhibit it. Contact like minded photographers and approach them to see if they would like to share the cost of running a show.
